Performance 'The Gaming Table - Joseph Beuys Social Sculpture with ABBA SOS and the Art Judging Stick as Divine Rod'
November 2019
Role-playing Joseph Beuys as game host exploring his ideas about social sculpture, political activism and the ‘frei-mensch’.
His relationship with the spiritual philosopher and education reformer Rudolf Steiner informed his work and the contemporary art platforms he engaged within. Research of the transcripts and video footage of his ‘performances’ and ‘actions’ are muffled and chaotic exaggerated by the bad audio quality. The way we are given information about Joseph Beuys is very limited and he can appear quite incoherent and this makes it very difficult to understand his concepts. The outcome became a comment on ‘what we are told’, ‘how we see the work/the context of an art work’. The idea that sculpture requires a logic and steps in making was subverted by the theatrical mind games.
